   from trish

haven't officially met Amber yet....

Back home from the SCAA and all of Zoka is trying to decompress. Good times by all,(but perhaps licking the wounds that the USBC so expertly inflicted on us).
Here is where I gush like a stupid groupie...I'm silly like that about baristas
Right on to Matt Riddle who is professionalism and craftmanship personified! So excited for you! Congratulations!
Billy! You are a solid favorite. You're one of the best we've ever had...I've always said so!
Amber, I'm Trish. I have seen you all over the place and I know many of your Intelly clan, but I don't think we've ever officially met. I have not seen your presentation either, and am bummed that it might be another year until I have a chance. Must say that I've always admired your fashion sense. You're lovely.
Ellie, you're a smarty and a pretty and I'm happy to know you. Thanks for fighting for the BGA too!
Jon Lewis, proof that creativity can win big at the USBC. We love you because we know you honor the coffee and the craft like no one else can!
Steve Fritzen! A new one in the final....niiiice! Well done, man!
Ryan, I give you a lot of credit. You knew you wouldn't make a ton of friends by protesting your semi-score. Perhaps no one will contest again, and I'll venture to say it could be because of you that they won't have to. Thanks for that.

On the subject of meeting people at conference: didn't get a chance to meet Amber this time, but I did get to meet Andy S from pf.net! It was a pleasure! I met Don Holly of Green mountain for the first time. Yay, but then I said a swear word within the first 2 minutes of our meeting and now he probably thinks I'm a lowlife. Don, I'm really not so horrid. I'll hope you'll forget me so I can meet you again at retreat. I got to hang out a little more with Jeremy from Ritual. We had met before, but it's just not like this time. That RG party was..how do the kids say?...RAD!
Kyle and Tonx, (aka the two stray cats) met a lot of cool people...if you get my drift. We know they will land someplace where they can continue their quest for excellence.
Aziz from Siberia met a whole bunch of new friends. He has been trying to come to an SCAA event for a couple of years and wasn't able to secure a visa until Charlotte.
I could mention a lot more here, but I have a lot of work to catch up on.

Sooooo....who did YOU meet?

Hi Trish,

It was a truly great time at the usbc. I get to know more and more people all the time. I didn't get to hang out with as many people as i'd like to but overall got to meet many wonderful and talented individuals. I did get to talk to a few new competitors whom were curious about what it takes to own a shop and how to go about getting into the biz. I really like connecting with anyone whom is willing to go the extra mile and give opening a quality focused shop a try. Alex MczCracken of Kaldi's coffee in St. Louis and Chris Baca of Wanderlust coffee in Cali were two of the guys i really got to chat with. Chris actually shared his hotel room with me for a few days. Thanks to all the people whom take the time to talk, inspire, and educate. I could not no it without you! Jay Caragay thanks for the chicken!!

congrats to everyone,

steve fritzen

Steve-

I had a feeling it was that cold Mert's chicken that gave you the extra oomph! But really, those thanks should go on to Laura and Jane from Espresso Supply for hosting the glorious buffet party at Mert's the night before.

I was just the delivery boy.

It was a great show. I got to meet a ton of folks: not counting the ones I forgot, there was Peter G, Amber, Eileen and Jeremy, Ryan Goodrow, Alistair, Andy C, the Clover folks, Miguel and Aaron, Sean Lennon (no, not THAT Sean Lennon), Lino, Brad F, Jon Lewis, Dismas, Gabe, Sandy, Jen Prince, plus I spent some quality time with the Gimme crew.

I loved meeting you, Trish, partly because I like talking to non-engineer types as a counterpoint to my own tendencies -- and partly because I just think you're cool. :-)

I DIDN'T get to chat with Mark Inman or Innie, which was disappointing. But meeting Andrew Barnett made up for the disappointment. He was so kind and so real that I choked up and had to take a minute in order to collect my composure. I love that guy.

An observation - people in this business are really good at remembering names. Folks Melanie met at Coffee Fest two years ago and hadn't seen since recalled her. Just about everyone we met in DC this year said hi - nice warm feelings all around.

Got to talk to Zander a little - interesting guy. Can never get enough Nick (and beginning to think he believes I've become a PITA).

Daryn & the folks at CCC continue to be amazingly nice to us even though we're Intelly customers for life or thereabouts - that's something you won't find in many other markets.
Of course the Intelly folks we're great as always.
And our roundtable discussion groups went to email discussion groups by end of last week... keep the discussions going.
And to think I didn't want to do this... I wanted to open a Mexican restaurant (hey, where's the love for cafe de olla?). Melanie dragged me into this two years ago. Glad her dream won out over mine. Although we still don't have decent Mexican in Pittsburgh.

I'm not one whose good with names. Amazing with faces but I really need to improve my name recollection. The local CCC crew (Lell & Serena) really worked hard the night of the party and the whole troop pulled off an amazing booth in some prime realestate being next to the BC.

Again I didn't get time to sit down with Nick. He's just too popular. But I did get a little time with MarkP, AndyS, MattM, MikeL, DanK, LemB, and a number of people whose name I really don't want to maim. Meeting Tony & KyleG was definitly a highlite. I've followed in their footsteps for a while and to get a moment was excellent. Some great groups we chatted with were the Rainforest Alliance and Coffee Kids folk. Fantastic initiatives and kind hearted individuals.

Voluntering was also an excellent way to rub elbows with some of the finest. I clocked in a little over 15h I think and highly recommend giving a little time. It felt great and the memories will last quite a while. If someone wants to set me on the path I'd like to do more in the future whether through committee or more sweat-equity.

I had a blast. I cannot fully vocalize how special this was for me and I hope to push that momentum forward in my world.
