   from Nick

What's with the attitude?

I've been asking myself this question for a while: What is it about the barista craft that seems to breed the primadonna bullshit that I see sometimes?

Well, maybe I can take some solace in the fact that it isn't just an American thing.

Got to say, I think we brought this on ourselves. We (well, some of us anyways) have become so hardcore on our quality of coffee. We do not want to compromise, only the best will do. We grind (pun intended) this over and over in our staff to ensure that they understand this. Then, when a customer comes in and orders something other that what we believe is right, the staff seemed to be compelled to "educate" this customer. This is where the attitue can to appear. If it does, it's our own darn fault! Stop and ask: are we spending as much time training the staff on customer service as we are on their coffee skills? I feel this is where the problem lies.

Gotta go off topic for a second to an earlier PF story--check out the letter to doubleshot coffee at http://www.doubleshotcoffee.com/blog/2006/11/i-won-dammit.html

Add your congrats to the list! Now back to your regularly scheduled commentary on barista snobery.

snooty baristas are no better or worse than a garcon at a fabulous french restaurant when the patron asks for a happy meal combo. part of the issue i think is that quality coffee still has not distinguished itself in the marketplace the way quality restaurants have. no one goes into mcdonald's to order a filet mignon; nor do they expect full table service, recommendations from servers and the like. that's because people know better. with the proliferation of coffeehouses people just see "coffee" on the sign and have little to no mental distinguishers in their minds. so they head into an upscale coffee bar and order a french vanilla cappuccino freezie. if you're more of a mcdonald's type coffee establishment you just get out your blender and hit it. but if you're higher end..."snobbery" is sure to ensue.

two cents...

Um.. name something that doesn't have a primadonna percentile? I've yet to cross one. In technology, sports, government, arts...there will always be those who like to rate themselves higher than those around them and they let the world know. I let them know that I don't want them working for me. ;-)

Stay true, stay humble, stay learning,
